Arctic 252 started as a project in the Spring of 2024. With the decline in LW broadcasts it was mostly with nostalgia the project was born. The challenge was to see if the viability of small-scale private broadcasting on LW could work.
The LW station will focus on locally produced, community programming covering the Arctic area in multiple languages.
252 kHz was the former home of Finland’s YLE longwave station from Lahti that was switched off in 1993.
If you would like to help the project please get in touch as we are currently also looking for a MW transmitter and need help from a broadcast engineer who has knowledge of LF antennas.
Many are still asking why 252 kHz given that Algeria is so strong on the same frequency. This is the ONLY LW frequency assigned to Finland, in order to get a clear channel it needs the radio authority here to apply to the ITU and then the ITU needs to meet to discuss with other countries in order for permission to be granted. Changing the ITU GE75 plan is no simple task and cannot happen just because Arctic wants a clear channel.
The station is still in the setup phase and will start test transmissions hopefully in August/September.
